Christmas Sangria

Festive pitcher and glasses of cranberry pomegranate holiday punch with orange slices, cranberries, rosemary, and cinnamon sticks, set against glowing Christmas tree lights
Jump to Recipe Print Recipe

The first time I made this christmas sangria recipe, I realized pretty quickly that adding the ginger beer too early flattened the whole thing. Ever since, it waits patiently in the fridge until the last minute, right alongside the sliced apples and cranberries soaking up all that red wine goodness.

This is the drink I make when the house is full, the music's on, and there's no time for last-minute fussing. It's sturdy, forgiving, and made for a holiday gathering where people keep refilling their glasses.

What makes it worth sharing is how well it balances fresh fruit, dry red wine, and warm spice without drifting into syrupy sweet territory. This is the version I keep coming back to, year after year, whenever the holiday season rolls around.

The Roots of This Recipe

Sangria has roots in Spain, where wine was often mixed with fruit juices and citrus to create a refreshing, communal drink.

Traditional sangria recipes were built around Spanish wine, fresh citrus, and whatever fruit was on hand, designed for sharing at large gatherings. Over time, red wine sangrias evolved to reflect regional tastes, especially in winter, when spices, apples, and cranberries became popular additions. Holiday sangria is a modern adaptation-less about strict tradition and more about creating a big-batch cocktail that fits the rhythm of celebrations like Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, and New Year's gatherings.

The Gist

Dietary Notes: Gluten-free, dairy-free

Why You'll Love It

  • It's a true big-batch cocktail, which means less bartending and more time enjoying your holiday party.
  • The flavor profile leans festive without being overly sweet, thanks to dry red wine, cranberry juice, and fresh citrus.
  • It's flexible enough for substitutions, whether you prefer ginger ale, club soda, or a splash of orange liqueur.

Sangria recipes like this one work especially well during the holiday season because they're meant to be shared. Red wine Christmas sangria has become a staple at winter gatherings simply because it feels celebratory without being complicated.

Chef's Tips for Christmas Sangria Recipe

Add bubbles last: Ginger beer or club soda should always go in right before serving to keep the drink lively.
Choose dry red wine: Sweeter wines can overwhelm the fruit juices and spices.
Slice fruit thin: Thinner slices absorb flavor better and are easier to serve.
Taste before serving: If needed, a splash of orange liqueur like triple sec or grand marnier can round things out.

What to Serve It With

Bisquick Sausage Balls

Hot Spinach Artichoke Dip

Bacon Wrapped Dates with Boursin

Chipped Beef Cheeseball

Crab Stuffed Mushrooms

FAQs

Can I make this sangria ahead of time?
Yes, the sangria base can be made up to 24 hours ahead without the ginger beer.

Can I use ginger ale instead of ginger beer?
Absolutely, ginger ale works well for a milder finish.

What other fruit can I use?
Fresh citrus like lime wedges or additional oranges work nicely.

Is this better with red or white wine?
This version is designed for red wine sangrias, but a white sangria variation works well in warmer months.

Leftovers & Storage

Store leftover sangria (without ginger beer) covered in the refrigerator for up to two days.

Add fresh ginger beer when serving again, as the carbonation won't hold overnight.

Freezing isn't recommended since the fresh fruit and sparkling elements don't thaw well.
