Halloween Popcorn Balls

Jump to Recipe·Print Recipe
Halloween popcorn balls with candy corn, candy eyes and colorful ghost sprinkles on a white oval platter. this …

Halloween Popcorn Balls are small, hand-shaped popcorn treats held together with buttery microwave caramel and decorated with Reese's Pieces, candy corn, candy eyes, and Halloween sprinkles. They're a playful addition to a Halloween dessert tray, with a coating you can make chewy or firmer and a size that's easy to wrap for party favors.

The batch makes about 20 small, 2-inch balls. Plan on 20 minutes of prep, 3-4 minutes of cooking, and about 30 minutes of cooling. If you want a loose snack instead of shaped treats, try my Caramel Corn.

Ingredients You'll Need

Popped popcorn, a quick brown-sugar caramel, and Halloween candies make up these popcorn balls. Keep some candies aside so you can press them onto the outside while the coating is still tacky.

  • Popcorn: Remove every unpopped kernel before mixing.
  • Salted butter, light brown sugar, and light corn syrup: The base of the microwave caramel.
  • Vanilla extract and baking soda: Stir these in after microwaving; the caramel will foam.
  • Candy-coated peanut butter candies and candy corn: Divide between the popcorn mixture and the decorations.
  • Candy eyes and Halloween sprinkles: Add after shaping.

Ingredient Notes and Substitutions

Air-popped popcorn or lightly salted packaged popcorn works here. You can replace the peanut butter candies with candy-coated chocolate pieces if preferred. If using unsalted butter, add ⅛ teaspoon kosher salt to the caramel.

For a different way to use candy corn, my Candy Corn Snack Mix is another Halloween snack option.

Tools That Make It Easier

You'll need a baking sheet, parchment paper, a large mixing bowl, a large microwave-safe bowl, a microwave, a heatproof spatula, measuring cups and spoons, and an airtight container for storage. Give both bowls enough room: one for tossing popcorn and the other for caramel that bubbles and foams.

How to Make Halloween Popcorn Balls

Make the caramel in the microwave, fold it through the popcorn, then shape and decorate while the mixture is cool enough to handle but still pliable.

Step 1 - Prep the popcorn and pan. Cover a baking sheet with parchment paper and choose a bowl large enough to toss the popcorn without spilling. Add the popcorn, ½ cup Reese's Pieces, and ½ cup candy corn to the bowl; keep the remaining candies nearby for decorating.

Step 2 - Microwave the caramel. Combine the butter, brown sugar, and corn syrup in a large microwave-safe bowl with plenty of room for bubbling. Microwave on high for 1 minute, stir thoroughly, then microwave another 2 minutes for a chewy coating or 3 minutes for a firmer coating, watching closely toward the end because microwave strength varies.

Step 3 - Add vanilla and baking soda, then coat. Carefully remove the hot bowl and stir in the vanilla and baking soda; the caramel will foam. Immediately drizzle it over the popcorn mixture and fold with a heatproof spatula, scraping the bottom of the bowl until evenly coated.

Step 4 - Cool briefly and shape. Let the mixture cool just until it can be handled comfortably but is still pliable; hot caramel can burn, so check a small portion first. Lightly butter your hands and gently press small portions into balls about 2 inches wide.

Step 5 - Decorate and let set. While the coating is tacky, attach the reserved candies and candy eyes, add the sprinkles, and place each ball on the prepared baking sheet. Let stand until completely cool and firm, about 30 minutes, then wrap individually or transfer to an airtight container.

Choose a Chewy or Firmer Coating

For a chewy coating, microwave the caramel for 1 minute, stir, then cook another 2 minutes. For a firmer coating, use 3 minutes after that first stir. Microwave strength varies, so watch closely toward the end rather than assuming every microwave heats the same way.

Have the popcorn and decorating candies ready before the caramel finishes. After adding the vanilla and baking soda, pour promptly and scrape the bottom of the mixing bowl as you fold so the coating reaches the popcorn underneath.

Shaping Without the Sticky Struggle

Lightly buttered hands help you shape the popcorn while the coating is still pliable. Check a small portion before handling the mixture, and wait until it feels comfortable; hot caramel can burn.

Use gentle pressure to gather each portion into a ball about 2 inches wide. Add the reserved candies, candy eyes, and sprinkles while the coating remains tacky, then leave the balls on parchment until completely cool and firm.

Keeping Leftovers Fresh

Keep individually wrapped popcorn balls in an airtight container at room temperature and enjoy within 3-5 days for the best texture. Humidity can soften the popcorn and make the coating sticky. Freezing is not recommended.

For party favors, let the popcorn balls cool and firm completely before wrapping. The storage window gives you a little room to prepare ahead without needing freezer space.

What to Serve with Halloween Popcorn Balls

Serve these popcorn balls on a Halloween dessert tray with cookies and pretzels, and offer apple cider or hot chocolate alongside. Classic Monster Cookies, Butter Toffee Pretzels, and Red Hots Apple Cider make a fitting party spread.
