The Gist

  • Cook Time | Total Time: 5 minutes | 35 minutes (chill time)
  • Yield: About 1 ¼ cups (10 servings)
  • Skill Level: Easy
  • Dietary Notes: Gluten-Free, Dairy-Free

Why You'll Love It:

  • Simple ingredients you already have in your pantry
  • No cooking-just mix and chill
  • Perfect balance of tangy, spicy, and savory flavors
  • Great for shrimp, oysters, or crab cakes

This homemade cocktail sauce recipe is the kind of thing you whip up in a flash and immediately realize-it's so much better than that bottled stuff you've been putting on your shrimp cocktail. You get the sweetness of the ketchup, a bright hit of fresh lemon juice, and that sharp, bold zing of horseradish. It's a classic seafood sauce that's perfect for shrimp cocktail, crab legs, or even prawn cocktail-basically, it brings out the best in fresh seafood every time.

A dash of Tabasco sauce gives it just the right kick, and with a good stir, everything comes together beautifully. This is the best cocktail sauce recipe you'll find for any seafood platter, or even as a dip for french fries and popcorn shrimp. And don't be afraid to make it your own. If you like it spicier, just add a little more horseradish-or keep it mild, depending on your personal preference. Forget the store-bought stuff-this homemade version is fresh, flavorful, and so much better than anything you'll find on the shelf. Whether you're at an oyster bar or serving it up at home, this sauce will be the star of the show.

Equipment You'll Need:

  • Mixing Bowl - Medium size works best for combining ingredients.
  • Whisk - For blending everything smoothly without lumps.

Gather Your Ingredients:

  • Ketchup - The base of your sauce, adding sweetness and depth.
  • Horseradish - Fresh horseradish root or jarred prepared horseradish, depending on your preferred level of heat.
  • Lemon Juice - Fresh is best, but bottled will work too.
  • Hot Sauce - Your favorite brand, such as Tabasco, for a spicy kick.
  • Worcestershire Sauce - Adds umami and richness to balance the heat.

Let's Get to Cookin':

Chill and Serve
Cover the bowl and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes. This gives the flavors time to meld together. Serve cold with shrimp cocktail, crab cakes, or raw oysters.

Mix the Sauce
In a medium bowl, combine the ketchup, horseradish, lemon juice, hot sauce, and Worcestershire sauce. Whisk together until smooth and well combined.

FAQs:

  • Can I make this ahead of time?
Yes, this sauce actually gets better after a few hours in the fridge. Prepare it a day ahead for convenience.
  • Can I freeze this cocktail sauce?
No, it's best made fresh. It doesn't freeze well due to the texture of the ketchup and horseradish.
  • Can I use a store-bought hot sauce?
Absolutely-any brand you like will do. For extra heat, try Sriracha for a twist!

Leftovers & Storage:

  • Store in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 1 week.
  • This sauce doesn't freeze well, so it's best made fresh and enjoyed soon.
  • For a little extra freshness, stir in a teaspoon of lemon zest before serving.

Instructions

Mix the Sauce

  • In a medium bowl, combine the ketchup, horseradish, lemon juice, hot sauce, and Worcestershire.
1 cup ketchup, 4 tablespoons horseradish, 2 tablespoons lemon juice, 2 teaspoons Tabasco hot sauce, 2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce

Chill and Serve

  • For the best flavor, cover and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes before serving.
  • Serve cold with boiled or fried shrimp, oysters, crab claws, or whatever seafood calls your name.

Notes

Substitutions:
• Horseradish: Freshly grated gives more punch, but jarred prepared horseradish works just fine. Adjust to taste—more if you like a nose-tingling kick, less if you prefer it mild.
• Hot Sauce: Any brand you love will do—Tabasco, Crystal, or even sriracha for a twist.
• Lemon Juice: Fresh is best, but bottled will do in a pinch.
Storage:
• Store in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 1 week.
• This sauce doesn’t freeze well—best made fresh and enjoyed soon after.
