Instructions

  1. Fill a mixing glass halfway with ice. Place a large ice cube or several smaller cubes in a rocks glass.
  2. Measure the bourbon and amaretto into the mixing glass, then add the bitters. Stir for 20–30 seconds to chill the mixture and allow a little ice to melt.
  3. Strain into the prepared rocks glass.
  4. Hold the orange peel over the drink and gently twist it to release its oils. Rub the colored side along the rim, then add the peel to the glass.

Notes

Substitutions: Replace the bourbon with Scotch for a more traditional version. For a less sweet drink, reduce the amaretto to 1 fluid ounce. If needed, substitute another aromatic bitters; the flavor will change slightly.

Serving suggestions and pairings: Serve with salted nuts, aged cheddar, or dark chocolate.

Storage: For advance preparation, combine the bourbon, amaretto, and bitters in a sealed container and refrigerate for up to 1 week. Add ice and stir just before serving; garnish with freshly cut orange peel.
